Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is amazing for treating pain and injury to the body. It is a light, gentle and safe form of bodywork that often brings about remarkable results and long-lasting relief from pain. A Bowen treatment involves a series of moves, which are small, rolling, gentle moves, over specific muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves, and these very specific moves trigger the body to begin a natural healing process. Bowen addresses the entire body by restoring balance to the autonomic nervous system. Therefore, it prompts the injured area, and body in general, to shift from a stressed, sympathetic state, to a rest and repair parasympathetic state. So not only does Bowen address the site of pain in the body but it also addresses the body as a whole. During a treatment it is not uncommon for clients to fall into a state of deep relaxation and even sometimes sleep. The Bowen technique has been popular in Australia for many years and is now becoming popular in the UK and because of its success in treating injury and pain it is now possible to get referred by one’s GP for Bowen Therapy on the NHS, which is a testament to its effectiveness in treating physical issues. While it is best to perform a Bowen treatment on skin it is also possible to do Bowen through light clothing so it is a non-invasive form of treatment. If one prefers Bowen while clothed it is necessary to wear light loose clothing, as clothing such as jeans prevent one from gaining the best results out of a treatment.

A Bowen session usually lasts between 40-55mins and is normally carried out on a massage table but can also be completed on a chair if it is more comfortable for the client. During the session a series of gentle moves are carried out (as described above) with pauses between each set of moves. These pauses allow the client’s body to respond to the Bowen work and in the majority of cases clients have a deep sense of relaxation after the treatment. The body continues to respond to the treatment for a few days after but often relief is gained during the session or shortly after, as Bowen facilitates the body's natural healing abilities. Therefore, Bowen is used to deal with a wide variety of issues. Here is a list of just some of the issues Bowen can be used to treat but there are many more.
